We 3D Printed the First Ever Arcade! Computer Space from 1971
Computer Space was the first commercially available Arcade Video Game, and as such a historic piece it carries a hefty price tag. Too much for us, so we decided to 3D print a replica with the help of Richard from Heber.

      It would be nice to display that for sure. As I explained it's not the first, but the more influential of the two. Ultima Underworld also came before Doom and demonstrated more advanced technology than the Doom engine, but Doom had the influence.

    When I bought my Atari 800 XL Computer magazines had advertisements that included Dragon computers in America. I don’t remember how much it cost, but I remember I considered it because of price. I was 13 and was buying a computer with the money I earned on a summer job.

    in Easy language.. PCs of the time had enough Ram and Just enough hard drive space to run the game from a casette tape or Floppy directly onto the RAM..... No GPU or Extra powerful PSU needed.. anyone that could play would play it...even an Amiga or Atari Joystick was compatible.

    Its not the same as a PC1512. It only has the orginal 4 colour CGA card. That's because its not really an Amstrad - it's a Kyocera made in Japan with Amstrad badges.

  • @jeremy-lz5ie
    @jeremy-lz5ie День тому

    The PC Junior and the Tandy machines also had a 16 colour CGA card, so programs which used it weren't all that rare.

    All the PAL Apple IIes were made in Limerick in Ireland. Yeah I know. They weren't actually made by Apple - they were made by a local company under licence which Apple acquired in 1987. Apple is now actually an Irish company.

    The black +2 is a +2A, which uses a different and simpler circuit board designed by Amstrad. A similar board was used in the +3. The first +2 used the same circuit board as the 128, which was designed (?) by the Spanish importer Investronica, although I think actually it is a slight redesign of the Timex 2068, the American Spectrum that was made by Timex in Portugal. Investronica introduced the 128 because the Spanish government introduced a heavy tax on micros with less than 128Kb of RAM.

  • @jeremy-lz5ie
    @jeremy-lz5ie День тому

    The reason it looks a bit like later consoles is because it is. The circuit board is a Sega SG-1000 supplied by Sega and it was used in the Sega SC-3000 computer and an upgraded version with more video RAM and another mode was used in the Sega Master System . Coleco didn't stop with the court case ; they introduced a reverse engineered Atari VCS console called the Coleco Gemini which did not violate copyright.

    A smoother surface could be made by thinning the resin, spraying on a thin coat then sprinkling on glitter. Let that cure then repeat a few times to get depth. Finish with a sprayed on resin coat, followed by a brushed then rolled coat of unthinned resin. That gets sanded and polished. For polyester resin the solvent to use is acetone. For epoxy, lacquer thinner, denatured alcohol, or acetone will work. Using thinners in epoxy will weaken the cured resin. The original Computer Space cabinets mostly likely had gelcoat polyester resin sprayed onto the inside of the mold then when that was almost cured the glass fiber mat and resin would have been laid up in the mold, or it could have been done with a chopper gun. A chopper gun takes spools of glass fiber, cuts them into short pieces and blows them onto the mold along with mixing resin with catalyst to spray on. In the 1960's and 1970's, fiberglass with a clear or transparent tinted outer coat with rather chunky glitter was a well developed process, used in many carnival ride parts, kit car bodies and fiberglass styling parts for vehicles.

    It's remarkable how close your got to 3D scan of the original through just working from 2D sources. None of the differences detract from the feeling of authenticity in the replica, it absolutely sells the illusion of being a Computer Space cabinet.

    I think a heat gun combined with air spraying gives you a better initial glitter application. You don't want it to fully dry, but you want it tacky for building up layers. After that you'd probably want to clear coat it, which you can apply with a brush liberally. If it was my cabinet, I would definitely apply that clear, then wet sand and polish it to a smooth glossy final result.

    Its surprisingly personal but as a kid my ADHD caused chaos and my nan and grandad would not accept that learning disabilities meant I was going to struggle with everything. They got sick of spending money on doctors that didn't help so thought out of the box. They thought I was gifted or had a talent but knew I lacked a way to apply it. I'm sure that Dixons took them for an absolute ride on the executive multimedia package they bought for me. P133, 16GB ram and 1.19GB hard drive but it was worth it because it gave me access to virtually everything I love and enjoy in life. It did allow me to manage or have some relief to my problems more than any ritalin ever could. That machine might have been simple but it was still my gateway into what has led to a career, passion and love of everything since. My heart is human, my brain IBM as the styx song goes. I remember playing Ultima Online on this thing every night for years. Magic, pure magic. An almost heavenly memory of the joy it gave me. I will never forget and will always appreciate what my now late grandparents did for me, the day that Packard Bell came home
